Modern Life

Paul Petro Contemporary Art is pleased to present Modern Life, an exhibition of new paintings and drawings by Toronto-based artist Sadko Hadzihasanovic. The show incorporates a large range of lifestyle iconography from popular culture, “images we are exposed to every single minute of our day. These images bombard us from different sources and have impact on our beings in all sorts of different ways.” These images come across as traditional still life and the inversion asks the viewer to decide what is modern living. In the second floor gallery a large new work, Missing Children, balances anxiety with hope while exploring the dark side of modern life.

Since his arrival from Bosnia in 1993, Sadko has participated in over thirty exhibitions in public galleries and artist-run centres across Canada. Upcoming exhibitions in 2002 include the group show XXX Testimonial at Mercer Union (Toronto) opening Thursday January 31, the touring group show Memories and Testimonies at the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery, Concordia University (Montreal), a group show at the Cultural Centre, Calbuco (Chile), a site-specific installation at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, Santiago (Chile) and a solo exhibition at Observatoire 4 (Montreal).

Sadko studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo, Bosnia, earned his MFA at the University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia (1984) and arrived in Canada in 1993. He is the recipient of grants from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. Modern Life is Sadko's fifth solo exhibition at Paul Petro Contemporary Art and is funded in part by the Toronto Arts Council.
