return, shift
Janet Morton
September 10 - October 9, 2010
Janet Morton's "return, shift" is a site specific mixed media installation. An old Underwood typewriter sprouts a garden of unfinished thoughts, incomplete sentences,and hybrid fakery all struggling towards insufficient language. Heavy hand knit vines parody organic growth, while playfully examining the nature of deliberate creative production. Some elements of this installation have been culled from "Hive" (2010) at the Robert Langen Gallery at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo.
Morton graduated from the Visual Arts programme at York University, Toronto, in 1990. Since 1989 she has exhibited extensively in group and solo exhibitions in public galleries and artist-run centres in Canada and the United States as well as England, Wales and Norway. These exhibitions include "Naked State - A Selected View of Toronto Art", curated by Phillip Monk for the Power Plant, Toronto (1994) and the solo exhibition "wool work", with catalogue, at the Museum for Textiles, Toronto (2000). Upcoming exhibitions include solo shows at Museum London (2011) and the MacDonald Steward Art Centre, Guelph (2012) with combined catalogue.
