New Work
Olia Mishchenko
September 11 - October 10, 2020
In addition to new work focused on cormorants, a native bird population in Ontario, Mishchenko’s exhibition includes a large drawing that was exhibited last year in Athens at Platforms Projects, an international art fair with the objective to map the artistic actions of collectives and initiatives by artists from Greece, Europe, and around the world, with a focus on work created and exhibited by artist-run centres. This drawing "depicts a hobby garden theatre, with a lot of props / stages / wordplay (hands) as well as an eggplant farm and apiary." Mishchenko's work was presented by Ed Video, Guelph, ON.
Olia Mishchenko was born in Kiev, Ukraine and moved to Canada in 1997. After a year at Central Tech, Mishchenko studied architecture and art history at the University of Toronto (1998-2004). Mishchenko’s artistic practice is predominantly drawings-based and concerned with built environments. Mishchenko lives and works in Toronto, where she teaches in the Environmental Design Programme at OCADU, and at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Permanent collections include the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada.
