Ron Giii
September 1 - November 29, 2001
Ron Giii's exhibition concentrates on small-scale drawings produced in 2000-2001. In addition, single works on paper from several earlier bodies of work, dating back to 1985, punctuate the exhibition with a lean chronology of the artist's drawing practice. These earlier works include selections from The Atomic Theatre (1985) and The Dictator's Opera (1986), first shown at Postmasters Gallery, New York in 1985, and in the following year at the 49th Parallel, New York. Since that time his work has appeared at venues including Cold City Gallery (1987,88,93) and the Evelyn Aimis Gallery (1989,90,91) in Toronto and in 1996 at the Power Plant in a group show entitled Heavy Mental, curated by Phillip Monk. The Art Gallery of Ontario purchased and exhibited a selection of recent works earlier this year. His work is also in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
Ron Giii is a Toronto-based artist who studied at the Ontario College of Art from 1973-75. He was recognized internationally in the 1970's as an interdisciplinary artist, working in performance, the written word, theatre, photography and film. His focus shifted to drawing in the mid-1980's while retaining the spirit of performance he had developed earlier in his career. His written word has a continuing presence in the titles written directly onto the drawings.
