Don’t You Like the Green of A?, by Nelson Henricks, is a surrealist interpretation of the correspondences between letters of the alphabet and colours specific to Joan Mitchell’s synaesthesia, a condition in which certain stimuli provoke an additional sensory perception. The colours representing the letters A through Z were sampled from a colour chart Mitchell created to document her synaesthesia. A pattern spelling out the words “Don’t you like the green of A?” figured prominently in the accompanying multimedia installation. This phrase, quoted from a conversation Mitchell had with Yves Michaud in which she discusses her synaesthesia, is featured here.
Nelson has an exhibition at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal running until April 10. For more information please visit our website here.
