Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center in the Bronx, is pleased to announce its 2021 exhibition season. This year, Wave Hill’s exhibitions stem from a spirit of collaboration. The curatorial team is working with artists and outside educational institutions to present work that reflects the interconnections between the creative process and the inspiration of nature. Beginning in May, Glyndor Gallery will be showcasing The Shadow of the Sun, featuring the work of Ross Bleckner and Zachari Logan.
The Shadow of the Sun: Ross Bleckner and Zachari Logan brings together two artists who are in different stages of their careers and have collaborated in the artmaking process over the past ten years. Though differing in mediums, processes and depictions, the abstracted imagery in Bleckner’s paintings complements the figurative representations in Logan’s drawings and sculptures—and vice versa. The artists share a sensibility in their ideas, forms, materials and motifs, including flora, fauna and human presence. At Wave Hill, the juxtaposition of Bleckner and Logan’s individual works along with their new collaborative pieces, including a large-scale, site-specific drawing for the gallery—creates a fresh context for exploring their notions of visibility/invisibility, queerness, contemporary landscape and the fragility of life.
Originally organized by the College Art Galleries at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, Canada, the exhibition has been adapted to Glyndor Gallery. It is curated by Wayne Baerwaldt, Jennifer McGregor and Leah Taylor. Zachari Logan was a Wave Hill Winter Workspace artist in 2016.

To listen to a conversation with Shadow of the Sun curators and artists please click here. In this program, the artists are in conversation around the exhibition themes of loss, memory and ephemerality with curators Wayne Baerwaldt, independent curator; Jennifer McGregor, moderator and former Director of Arts and Senior Curator at Wave Hill; and Leah Taylor, Curator of Contemporary Art at Kenderdine Art Gallery/College Art Galleries at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon. Bleckner, Logan and the curators discuss the artists’ work in the exhibition and the use of flowers to represent societal and personal melancholy, as well as reverential beauty. The artists also reflect on the nature of their collaboration and how their ongoing creative exchange has developed over the years.
