Bellevue
Group Exhibition
April 14 - May 12, 2001
Paul Petro is pleased to present this exhibition in cooperation with Toronto's Images Festival of Independent Film and Video.
Bellevue brings together the technology-based work of Doug Back, Michael Buchanan and Norman White. In his most cinematic work to date, Doug Back's Sect is a small sculpture with moving arms that is programmed to perform ritualistic movement. Animated by a light sensor and a light projection system, Sect is a model that simulates some sort of low order brain function. Michael Buchanan's recent work, To Do , investigates the use of personal electronic devices such as palm-pilots and how these devices influence our relationships to temporality, the media, and more importantly, our personal relationships. And in an ironic return to painting, Norman White revisits a past work.
All three artists are based in southern Ontario. Doug Back and Norman White teach in the Photo-Electric Arts department at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Michael Buchanan teaches Electronics for Sculpture at the Toronto School of Art.
